Muslim Women & Hijab... A mighty challenge..

Lately, I saw a lot of comments in Facebook on the hijab of muslimat (muslim women). I agree with all the comments because they are all about the truth. But, I also acknowledge the challenges that we face, as muslim women in complying with the actual definition of hijab.

* Most of the captions in the images are in Malay... let me know if you need translation :)

What we naturally like, as women is as in the picture on the left while what is required from us is like the picture on the right.

So, this is where the challenges begin.
Where all the tests of our iman is put on us...
The tests which required all the strengths (of heart) that we have..

TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT.

As someone who has been up & down the stages 2-7 all my life (but most of it is at stage 5) and I have only been consistently staying at the stage 6-7 for the past 3-4 years, I can say that I understand these challenges.

We women like to look beautiful & stylish...
We also like to be praised for it, even though we sometimes deny this :)
But, this is the truth.
And this is also the reason why we have a lot of challenges in fulfilling the requirement of hijab.

Plus, there are so many female fashions out there that is not syariah compliant.
The fashions, they look beautiful, so stylish, so fashionable, so modern, so tempting...

and our weak heart always fell for it...

So, what can we do about this?
What can we do so that we comply with the requirement of hijab, but also look presentable?

First thing first, we do not want to be like what is captioned in the image below:

and please avoid the extremes...
  • Extremely tight (leggings, skinnies are definitely a no-no)
  • See through clothing (because it just defeat the purpose)
In this case, I guess what we need to learn first, is the actual definition of hijab.

The image below summarized the definition quite nicely (except we don't have to look like we're marching when we walk... just don't sway too much)

Then, find some of the examples out there... the examples of muslimat who dress up nicely & still syariah compliant :) We have a lot of professional muslimat to look up to...

All pretty & successful...

Whatever it is... moderation is the key.
Not too much, not too little...
Please also remember that, sloppy is not equal to moderate :P

We can do this you know... be syariah compliant.
All we need is the strength of the heart.
And we women are already a strong creation...
This should not be such a big challenge to us until we cannot improve ourselves even bit by bit.
Just put our heart into the determination to climb up the stages.
And...
Find the circle of friends who will support us with this cause :)

To those who are still looking for the strength to take on the first step of hijab, I hope the answer from Ustaz Azhar Idrus in the image below will open your heart.

We can do this! Lets beat these challenges together!

Speechless still climbing...
Pray for me.

As usual, please correct me whenever I am wrong...

Thank you! Love y'all! Muah mmmuahhhhh!!!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Easily the best movie of 2013...

It has everything... adventures, actions, humours, wits, courage... and even a love story... auwwww...

This movie adaptation made me want to read the book...

Tauriel, Legolas & Bard made me want to sign up for an archery class...

and the landscapes made me want to book a flight to New Zealand like, right now!

Gosh!

Please just go watch it!

Chef Michael Smith...

always gets me into a cooking mode :)
'Chef Michael's Kitchen' is definitely my favourite TV show for the moment.
The way he cooks is so simple and he showed us how we can be creative in the kitchen.
I love it!
I can't wait to get his cookbook... hihihiiiii...

Chef Michael with his desirable spice rack :)

So, we won't forget...

I have had enough with all these nonsense...
Nonsense answers...
We are all well educated people, yet they tried to treat us like idiots...

This entry is not specific to any political party...
Instead, this is a reminder to all leaders...

DON'T SAY STUPID THINGS!
WE, THE CITIZENS, ARE NOT STUPID PEOPLE!

Seems like, since the latest election, a lot of prices went up...
Petrol, sugar, property assessment tax in KL... (http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/commentary/263279-tong-kooi-ong-blogs-dbkls-200-assessment-hike-is-not-right.html)
Next is LRT & monorel...

All in less than a year...
After this, what's next?

With all these prices going up & up, added with all the ridiculous answers from the ministers, my blood pressure is definitely going up too... up to a boiling point.

I don't even want to talk about property price, crime rate, social problems... Malaysian education...

There is a saying... 'MELAYU MUDAH LUPA'...
So, I'm putting these few examples in here because we really need to remember this...
So we shall not forget in lets say, the next 5 years?

We shall not easily forget this... not until this kind of stupidity stops...

Hopefully things will change for the better soon...
Hopefully all these cockiness & selfishness will stop soon too..

P/S: I know the examples I put in here are from one side only, but for the other side... don't be too proud of yourself. You are just '2 X 5'.

Thank you very much.

The Hunger Games - Catching Fire

I can't wait for this movie to come out in November 2013.

I love the first movie so much and I hope the second one will be much better.

Who doesn't love a tough beautiful kind girl kick-a** and winning a game with a strategically brilliant kind boy who has a crush on her since forever?

I love it. Don't tell me that you don't :P

My favorite my scene from the first movie was when they decided to eat the Knighlock berries.

Such a rebellious underdogs! Brilliant! Just brilliant!

Anyway... for now, I'll just have to be patient and accompany myself with the second book while waiting for the second movie. And, to lure you to flood the cinema the end of this November, I present to you the trailer of the 75th Annual Hunger Games - Catching Fire.

May the odds be ever in your favour!

Shanghai, China

I got a chance to travel to Shanghai last September. I've always loved traveling to China... I don't know why. I think it's most probably because I think that the country is so BIG... so many places to explore. In this case, I think I would enjoy traveling to Russia & USA too...

Anyway, Shanghai is a big city. Bigggg... they can afford to have big roads complete with a special lane for 2 wheels and another special lane for pedestrians.

And they have a lot of trees! Big big trees! I like!

My experience:
  • Honest taxi drivers. Even though a few people warned me to be careful with the taxi drivers, I didn't feel cheated at all. They all used the metres for the taxi fare. I searched on Google map how long it would take for me to reach the hotel from airport so that I'll have some ideas if I was being cheated. Google map said it will take about 30 minutes... I reached hotel in about 35 minutes. No cheating there right? Nope!
  • Food... I've always loved Chinese food. The canteen at the plant served vegetarian food. Nice... and there was a HALAL stall just across the Radisson Blu hotel. Lucky me!
  • A lot of handmade items... clothes, bags, table cloth, table runner... things like that... and cheap imitation products. But, as usual... bring your bargaining skill with you :)
  • The city is clean... Yup, clean... I'm impressed.
  • The city is full of modern architecture... and also I didn't get to go to The Bund. But, I'll go there next time I go to Shanghai. From pictures, The Bund looks awesome!
  • The weather on my third & fourth day there was so lovely... the sun was shining, the wind was blowing, the air was cool, the trees were dancing... I was definitely smiling... Happy!
  • All nice people.. not so friendly but the ones I met, were nice people. So, it all comes to that. The people are the ones that makes a traveling experience a wonderful one :)
  • But... the driving... Fast & Furious like driving... I kept hitting my imaginary emergency break at the passenger sit. OMG! I just hope they don't drive like that if they came to Malaysia.

I didn't take much picture during my time in Shanghai... Why was that??? I was busy soaking in the view of the trees, the sky, the rivers and the buildings... I'll remember to take more pictures in my next trip :)

For now, I hope you'll enjoy these few pics that I managed to take.

A tiny Utor Typhoon Experience in Hong Kong

I was in Hong Kong last week, when Utor typhoon passed over it.
It was a new experience for me since I've never seen a typhoon before...
It was also one of the times when I feel so lucky to have a country like Malaysia. Geographically strategic, we are still safe from natural disaster like this (so far...)

Fortunately, Utor typhoon didn't do damage to Hong Kong.

I arrived in Hong Kong without having any idea that there was a typhoon approaching. First information I received was when I read an alert at a shopping mall entrance.

'Utor Typhoon' alert level 3.

'Ehhhh... what's this?'
So, I ignored the warning (this is what lack of experience did to me... not even a typhoon alert can scare me of :P)

But then, the hotel started to hand out information on the communication for the typhoon. All I remembered was the alert level can reach up to level 8, where everyone had to stay indoors & shops will be closed.

So, that was what happened on Wednesday, 14-August-2013. The alert level reached to level 8. Since the meeting that I was attending was conducted in the hotel where I was staying, sad to say that I didn't get to go outside when it happened and kept wondering where all our Hong Kong colleagues were :) On that day, flights were cancelled, schools & offices were closed & public transportation were stopped.

I can't tell you guys how is an alert level 8 typhoon feels like. But, at level 3, the wind was so strong and it kept raining on & off. The clouds were thick & moved so fast like someone was pressing the fast forward button. I was in awe because it was like watching a documentary on tv. It was a nice experience (since nothing really bad happened).

My flight back to KL was delayed because of the typhoon... but I don't have anything to complain for since Cathay Pacific compensated me for being a cooperative customer. It was one of the days when I think my patience paid off & there are silverlinings to everything :)

Here are some of the photos during Utor typhoon alert level 3. I'll share the video later.

Egypt & The War on Democracy

Sad sad news I received today...

Source: Al-Jazeera --> http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2013/07/20137319828176718.html
I can't say much... I'm not a politician nor a political observer... I hardly watch news to avoid breaking my heart. I'm more calm staying under my peaceful 'coconut shell'. Peeking out once in a while just to get some updates from the world around me... Then, when the news starting to break my heart again, I quickly get back under the coconut shell.

But, despite my once in a while peeking, all the news that I received of President Mohamed Morsi, are all good news. An Islamic leader from Ikhawanul Muslimin... an educated person, a president with a humble and sincere heart... so as his wife & children...

How come people refused to have this kind of person as their president?

This is sick!

What happened to Egypt today, reminded me of a documentary by John Pilger entitled 'The War on Democracy'. You have to watch this documentary.

JOHN PILGER's 'THE WAR ON DEMOCRACY'

The same thing has happened before to Hugo Chavez... but at that time, the people of Venezuela had gotten back the President that they elected via a democracy process, even after a coup.

To President Morsi, his families, all his cabinet members and the people of Egypt who had elected him, keep praying. Allah is always with those who are defending the truth.

And in the end, the truth will prevail.

Do not forget to pray for the safety & unity of all our fellow Muslims, where ever we all are.

2013 Haze in Malaysia...

Assalamualaikum & Good day Y'alls!

How are you guys doing? Hope you guys are doing fine and are in good health despite the hazy weather. Please wear your mask when you're outdoor... We can't see the dust particles, but they are there in the air... If we keep collecting them in our lungs, maybe we don't get sick now, but we might in 10 or 20 years...

Age do that to our body you know...

To smokers... isn't the haze enough? Do you still have to smoke?!
If you still do, please do not do it in public. Have some respect & compassion for other people for God's sakes!

Anyway, when I look at the haze... all I can think of is, how we human can do so much harm to our environment... to our Earth... to Earthlings...

As if all the carbon monoxide from the cars we drive (I'm included), all the CFC we released from our homes & buildings and all the pesticides haven't done enough harm to our Earth...

The ozone layers are still not thin enough! It's still protecting the Earthlings from the harmful UV rays! There must be something else that we can do to to expedite the process!

I know! Open burning! Lot's of open burning!
The thick smokes will cover the sky in 3 countries! So, much carbon monoxide! That's it! So much harm can be done! From just a simple action!

We want to blame our neighbour for the smoky sky... and our neighbour fought back saying that companies from our country also to be blamed for the open burning.

All the fingers pointing here and there... still no solution was found. The smokes will come every year... we will fight and blame each other every year for the same reason. We are a sad bunch of people...

I'm rambling... but I don't have any idea on how to solve this problem... except maybe one...

Maybe our neighbour should pay us compensation when the open burning in their country causes the Air Pollution Index (API) in our country to reach the unhealthy level. I think, this way our neighbour will impose a more strict rules to the relevant companies (whether it is their own or their neighbours').

Other than that... we need to do more research on how to handle the plantation industries so that it is more environmental friendly and good for the economy. Homosapiens are creatures with the best brain. We should be able to find a solution to this (once we stop blaming each other).

Before I go... a few photos of the hazy skies taken when I was on the road last Sunday.

Oh how I miss the blue sky... the sunshine... the RAIN!

Sunrise @ Cameron Highland

I just love Cameron Highland... mostly because of the cool air. But, lately... it's getting hotter there.
That makes me really sad.

This trip, I made an effort to go out & watched the sunrise. It was just beautiful.

That's us having a blast!

Imagine Dragons - It's Time

After listening to this song over & over again from TM advertisement, I'm hooked to the chorus... and then I'm hooked even more after listening to the whole song. This song will be my driving song for a while :P

It's time to begin, isn't it?   --> YES!
I get a little bit bigger (not literally, please... no bigger than now)
but then I'll admit
I'm just the same as I was
Now don't you understand
That I'm never changing who I am --> but, I will always improve myself!

Hope you'll enjoy this song.

*****

So this is what you meant
When you said that you were spent
And now it's time to build from the bottom of the pit
Right to the top
Don't hold back
Packing my bags and giving the academy a rain check

I don't ever wanna let you down
I don't ever wanna leave this town
'Cause after all
This city never sleeps at night

It's time to begin, isn't it?
I get a little bit bigger, but then I'll admit
I'm just the same as I was
Now don't you understand
That I'm never changing who I am

So this is where you fell
And I am left to sell
The path to heaven runs through miles of clouded hell
Right to the top
Don't look back
Turning the rags and giving the commodities a rain check

I don't ever wanna let you down
I don't ever wanna leave this town
'Cause after all
This city never sleeps at night

It's time to begin, isn't it?
I get a little bit bigger but then I'll admit
I'm just the same as I was
Now don't you understand
That I'm never changing who I am

It's time to begin, isn't it?
I get a little bit bigger, but then I'll admit
I'm just the same as I was
Now don't you understand
That I'm never changing who I am

This road never looked so lonely
This house doesn't burn down slowly
To ashes, to ashes

It's time to begin, isn't it?
I get a little bit bigger, but then I'll admit
I'm just the same as I was
Now don't you understand
That I'm never changing who I am

It's time to begin, isn't it?
I get a little bit bigger, but then I'll admit
I'm just the same as I was
Don't you understand
That I'm never changing who I am

Al-Fatihah: S Shamsudin

I just found out that S Shamsudin had passed away yesterday.
This is such a sad news.
I grew up watching the Bujang Lapok comedy.
Ramlee, Sudin & Ajis are my favorite comedy characters of all time.
The chemistry between those three were unbeatable.

My favourite is 'Seniman Bujang Lapok'. The movie is hilarious.
To me, until now, there is now better comedy than the Bujang Lapok trilogy.

P. Ramlee had left us for a long time now.
The brightest star in Malaysia film industries.
The most talented star.
Now, S Shamsudin had left us too.
So sad...

I've always loved 'Sudin'. He's a tough guy with a kind heart.

Sudin & Ramlee left us with the sweetest memory of them...
Their comedy never fail to tickle...
No matter how many times we watch it.
No matter how many times we heard the dialog.

Eh apa punya laki? Pasal belacan aje pun ko nak pancung dia?
Eh apa shooo? Engkau sememangnya manusia durjana...

Al-Fatihah for S Shamsudin.
May Allah blesses his soul.

Amin.

Untuk Orang Kita... Masa Untuk Berubah

Thank you so much to my dear friend MT.
This video is a smack to the head & straight to the heart...

The video is in Malay...
Even though the word used was 'Bumiputera', I somehow believe that subtlely it is dedicated to Malays...

Why wait?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Such a delayed post!

LOTR fever never quite left me. I think it never will.
Now I've caught 'The Hobbit' fever. I'm gonna be sick for a long long time :p

I don't need fo write about how wonderful this movie is. Everyone knows it. Peter Jackson & the gang are the best in this business. I'm particularly drawn to the movie locations. The landscapes are amazing. I will go to New Zealand someday. Maybe on sabatical leave. 2 weeks in NZ will not be enough.

Anyway, what I want to say today is, I've always thought Andy Serkis as 'Gollum' is the best actor ever! Ever since LOTR. He has improved so much in 'The Hobbit'. Who would have thought of 'Gollum' as cute & funny. At some point, even feel so sad for him for losing his 'precious'.

Andy Serkis is an amazing actor!

But then, Martin Freeman was amazing too! The way he portrayed the 'Bilbo Baggins' character was very believable. I can understand & even feel how Bilbo was feeling. You can feel the hesitation & the excitement of a homey person who is longing for an adventure.  You can feel the dilemma of someone who has never been in a fight, yet had to go into a battle.  Bilbo showed the true meaning of courage & Martin Freeman expressed that meaning with an accurate facial & body language.

I'm totally impressed.

'The Hobbit' also proven that a movie can be a hit even without hunks & hotties. Let's just admit it. The dwarves are no Boromir, Aragorn, Legolas, Eomer nor Faramir (except maybe for one particular dwarve). But, they are hunks & hotties nevertheless :) And the dwarves are a funny lot. That's a good quality right? Heheheee...

Can you spot the particular one?
The riddle scene between Bilbo & Gollum was most enjoyable. Bilbo is such a smart hobbit. That's very attractive :p

I can't wait for the 2nd movie. But, in the meantime...

Take care y'alls!

Voting is a Citizen's Responsibility

This is a suitable quote, in the heat of Malaysia voting season.

*****

“The worst illiterate is the political illiterate, he doesn’t hear, doesn’t speak, nor participates in the political events. He doesn’t know the cost of life, the price of the bean, of the fish, of the flour, of the rent, of the shoes and of the medicine, all depends on political decisions. The political illiterate is so stupid that he is proud and swells his chest saying that he hates politics. The imbecile doesn’t know that, from his political ignorance is born the prostitute, the abandoned child, and the worst thieves of all, the bad politician, corrupted and flunky of the national and multinational companies.”

SILA SEBARKAN/SHARE...Nauzubillahiminzalik, Astaghfirullahaladzim

(orang Indonesia baik dan ramah, pintar dan rajin.. that’s a fact!)

...

Aku ingat ceramah agama lah.. dia punya penceramah punya semangat berkobar2.. “Kita semua sudah berdosa! Allah Maha Kuasa! Allah Maha Penyayang! Kembalilah kita semua ke jalan Allah! (aku dalam hati, Alhamdulillah.. bagus!) pastu tak pasal2 dia sambung “Kembalilah ke Yesus Kristus dan Bunda Maryam!” aku langsung tergolek… astaghfirullah! ceramah Kristian rupanya..

Satu lagi kenangan aku kat Indonesia, kalo baca surat khabar sana nanti ada slot obituaries: “Telah Kembali ke Rahmat Allah, Sdr. XXX pada XXX Semoga ruh beliau dicucuri rahmat Allah” Bila tengok balik nama yang mati Eduardus, Kristus, Paulus, etc. (nama org Kristian) pastu ada salib diikuti tulisan kecik “ash to ash, dust to dust, fade to black”… tergolek lagi aku..

Satu lagi cerita aku kat Indonesia, satu hari aku ‘bermusafir’ lah ke daerah Jawa Barat naik motor, pastu nak berhentilah solat.. aku toleh ke kiri kanan jalan cari masjid.. Pastu aku nampak ada signboard kalimah Allah (dlm arab!) pastu ada banner “Ayuh kerjakan kewajipan kita kepada Allah dan agamanya!” aku pun pergilah dekat.. tup2 aik, awat lain macam tempat ni, siap ada patung jesus kena salib??!! Tergolek lagi aku.. lah.. gereja Kristian rupenye.. Satu lagi kat sana nak beli buku-buku agama kena hati-hati.. Aku dulu pernah ‘usha’ buku kat kedai buku..

Ada satu buku aku tak ingat persis tapi tajuk buku dia lebih kurang camni: “Memantapkan Iman Anda Kepada Allah” bila bukak2 browsing per helai aku start confuse, amacam lain macam aje ayat2 dan hadis dia.. Aku tengok balik lah.. ayat2 kutipan dari Bible.. tergolek aku lagi.. lah, buku dakwah Kristian rupanya.. risau gak klu jadi camni kat M’sia

From: Syeikh Mohammad Sharif Mohammad Imrani al-hafiz

I want to write about what is happening in Lahad Datu...
I want to thank all of our patriots fighting in Lahad Datu...
I want to write a dedication to all of the patriots that we lost fighting in Lahad Datu...

But it is all so so very sad...
It's impossible to read the news of our fallen heroes without shedding tears...

Maybe I'll write about it when it's all over...

I pray that the Tausug will go back to where they came from...
Stop disturbing us! Stop ruining our land! Stop killing our people!
Stop acting like you are the victims!
It's embarassing!

Arrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

That is why I don't want to write about that...

What I want to share today, was published in 'Berita Harian'... and it has answers to a few important questions... the new is in Malay.

Anggota keselamatan pertahan negara mati syahid: Imam Besar Makkah

2013/03/14

KUALA NERANG: Imam Besar Masjid Aba'ah, Makkah, Syeikh Mohammad Sharif Mohammad Imrani al-hafiz berkata anggota pasukan keselamatan Malaysia yang berjuang mempertahankan kedaulatan negara mati syahid.

- BERNAMA

Jimmy Palikat - Orang Kampung

I'm in the mood of promoting this to the whole world!
(even though this song has been around for a while now)

Thanks to my mom who kept singing this and now it keeps on playing in my head... ngeeeee...

Enjoy!

Happy 2013 & Things that made me smile...

I hope it's not too late to wish all of you Happy 2013.

Life has been a bit static lately & writer's block has been frequent... Need to do something about this ya... hmmm...

Anyway, my first entry this year is...

Random things that made me smile lately...

1. Early morning last week, around 7.15 am, in KL... a car broke down in the middle of the road... The driver was struggling to move his car to the roadside... a few motorists stopped and helped him. It's nice to see that in the middle of their busy lives & while rushing to go to office, they still found the time & a heart to help others in need. That was one of the moments that made me so proud of my ordinary countrymen :) and made me smile.

2. While listening to Nasional FM...  there was an advertisement about BR1M which I assumed at first was a 'kiss a**' advertisement (mind my language... heheheee...) but, I was so wrong. Listening to the rest of it, it's actually an advertisement to remind us that although BR1M was given by our government, lets not forget that it's actually from Allah and... when the person said, 'dewan BR1M penuh, tapi masjid nak dapat satu saf pun susah' (something like that... I don't remember the line exactly), it was really 'in my face'... and made me smile... an embarassed smile that is... erkkk...

So, the lesson is... do not forget to be grateful to Allah. Everything is from Him...

3. When I turned on my radio last Saturday, I heard this song for the first time... and it made me smile. So, I wanna share the song with you guys... Enjoy!

My favourite line is...
     Hidup mewah tanpa berhutang
     Hati bersih tak lupa sembahyang

Happy 2013 you guys! I wish you all the best that life can give to you!
